The EEIA has achieved notable accomplishments and has undertaken impactful projects since its establishment in 2014. During 2014-2016, the EEIA focused on developing floating treatment wetlands for Johannesburg, pioneering the "wetland in a box" technology, and researching low-cost sewage wastewater treatment solutions for SADC countries. Collaboration with local communities and governments facilitated practical implementation and capacity building. In 2017-2018, the EEIA conducted industrial ecology research, explored alternative biomaterials for sustainable industries, and participated in global Green Infrastructure project reviews. From 2019-2022, their research expanded to encompass human and natural systems in African environments, managed aquifer recharge, and discussions for institutionalization with the University of the Free State. In 2023, the EEIA successfully institutionalized at UFS, continuing their work on nature-based solutions for water and wastewater treatment and developing a BioCredit system for landscape regeneration using bio-intelligent approaches. These achievements showcase the institute's dedication to promoting ecological engineering and fostering sustainability in Africa, addressing environmental challenges, and enhancing resilience in ecosystems and urban areas.
